Throwback Thursday - Me and Ettie

The year on this picture from my Aunt Dot's photo album is 1953.  That means I was 3, and my aunt Esther (Ettie) was 23.  We were supposed to be posing with the "helicopters" from the maple tree on our noses.  Obviously I couldn't resist sneaking a peak at the photographer, most likely my Aunt Dot.  I'm so thankful for these old pictures!

My Grandmother's Attic

Today I came across these two pictures of my Dad.

The first one was taken some time when he was in the Navy obviously.  I have no idea when or where.

I have no idea when or where this one was taken either.

I used to love my grandparents' attic.  So much old stuff up there.

I used to keep all of my dolls up there and would pretend it was my "house."  My cousin and I would spend hours up there playing dolls.  In the summer it was oppressively hot, and in the winter it was freezing.  We didn't care.  It was our "house".

I found my mother's wedding dress up there and my aunts'  bridesmaids dresses from different weddings that they were in.

There were a lot of old telephones and a Morse code transmitter (my grandfather used to work for Western Union).

I remember when I found my Aunt Ettie's braids.  Her real hair braids.  They were in some kind of bag and I remember being freaked out touching the hair while pulling it out of the bag.  I can't imagine what that haircut looked like.  They must have just cut the braids off for them to still be intact!

I found my father's old Navy uniform and letters that he had written to my grandmother while in the Navy.  I wish I had those now.  They probably got tossed when Dot and my grandmother sold the house and moved into a condo.

There were two huge pictures in very ornate frames up there.  One was the picture of my Dad on the tricycle, and the other was of Dot when she was a child.  Dot never liked her picture and at some point took the picture out and put dried flowers in the frame.  My Dad liked his picture and eventually took it to his house, probably when my grandmother moved.

I was 29 when Nan and Dot moved, lived in a brand new house, and never thought or cared about all that old stuff anymore.  Paul brought home some of my grandfather's tools and the old telephones, but most of the stuff in the attic got thrown out.  Maybe it's a good thing; one can only keep so much. What I wouldn't give to go back up into that old attic again though!

Ettie's visit with Dot, Day 2

Last night Kristen brought Marley over to visit Dot, etc. and today Mark brought Mason. We had our own little "living room" all to ourselves.

We all really had a good time together. There were a lot of laughs and, when leaving, a lot of tears. I hope that we can do this many more times for Dot and Ettie.

Ettie's visit with Dot, Day 1

My aunt Esther (I call her Ettie) came for a quick visit with Dot this weekend. She lives in Delaware, about 6 hours away, and doesn't make the drive by herself anymore, so her daughter-in-law Tammy brought her up.

Dot has been doing very well lately. She hasn't packed up her room or taken down her pictures in quite a while. Well.........today when we got there she said she was all packed up to go home...and she was. Pictures off the wall, closet empty, bathroom toiletries packed up. I couldn't believe it. I felt so bad for Ettie; I wanted her to see how well Dot was adjusting.

It was fleeting, though. They came around to get them into the dining room for snack, and by the time snack was over, Tammy and I had put her whole room back together, and Dot never mentioned it again for the rest of the weekend.

My family has always been known for being loud. Even when I was a kid my grandmother would go around shutting the windows in the summer because "what are the neighbors going to think." When my aunts and my father get together, we are loud. This evening during sing-a-long, we all got laughing because my dad and Esther were really getting into singing, but they couldn't hear the music well and were a couple of beats ahead of the music, which made the rest of us laugh. I think we were the entertainment for the whole place!

It was a good day!

315/365 - Veteran's Day, David R. Waite

For Veteran's Day, Marley's 3rd grade class had an assignment: write a paragraph about a person they know in a military uniform.

This is what she wrote:
This is my Great-Grandpa David Waite. He was only 17 when he joined the Navy. He was in the Navy from November 1944 until July 1946. He was a member of the forward crew on the USS Sirona. The Sirona was one of over 100 ships in Tokyo Bay getting ready to invade Japan when Japan surrendered and the war was over.

Thank you to all of our veterans!
